Leaving KINSHASA early on the 15th of May, we made our way through the heavy city traffic to finally reach KIMPOKO, where we were quickly greeted by the many children and the widows of the village. It had been a few weeks since we had returned to the village due to our work load but it felt great to see the many smiling and familiar faces. La Soeur Ghyslaine reminded us that we needed to visit more often.
We visited the school children and we had the opportunity to visit the Medical Centre. It became apparent that we Canadians also had a major impact on the center through the World Health Organization. Most of the equipment; hospital beds, medicine cabinets and desks and chairs were tattooed in bright red paint with ACDI (CANADA) - which stands for the Agence Canadienne de Développement International. We questioned the head nurse about the equipment and she told us that Canada had funded most of the equipment that was part of their inventory. It is funny how Canada and Canadians have an impact in the most remote parts of the world. It was time to depart, and the children ran behind the dust clouds created by our UN vehicle – shouting: "au revoir et à bientôt" (goodbye and see you soon).
